Loving Your Old House
Tuesdays in July (2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, & 30th)
6:30pm - 8:30pm
Historic Madison, IN Properties
General Information
This educational program will take place on Tuesday evenings in July from 6:30-8:30 PM each week at an HMI property. Learn how to preserve and protect your old home from the experts - those who do the work. This five- session program will look at masonry, wall coverings and paint, trim and moldings, window repairs, and landscaping to fit your historic neighborhood.
Participants in Loving Your Old House will learn how to care for or start to repair portions of their old home. They will learn the key components of caring for a historic home and the work they need to consider to continue protecting historic properties for decades to come. Participants can attend one session or any combination of up to all five sessions as each session is an independent topic and attendance at all sessions is not required. Participants can pick and choose the sessions that best suit their old house needs.
The unique features of historic homes are non-renewable resources that are worth preserving all on their own. They are some of the most visible parts of a building that add great character and beauty, but they are regularly overlooked or underappreciated
to the point of their removal. In historic communities like Madison, there are features of homes, businesses, and facilities that showcase the past while reflecting the present, but they are disappearing at an alarming rate. Saving an old building’s historic features turns into long-term cost savings, reduces impacts on the environment (particularly what shows up in a landfill), and allows for the preservation of resources that cannot be replicated today.
Participants will have time with each of the session experts to learn how to care for the different parts of their home. This program is a great opportunity for anyone interested in preserving an old home for future generations inside and out. We look forward to seeing homeowners (both Madisionians and beyond), DIYers, contractors, students, historic preservationists, and community representatives at Loving Your Old House.
