About the Costigan House
The Costigan House, built in 1851, is recognized as a triumph of design for a home on a 22- foot wide lot. This historic house museum incorporates space-saving features such as a sliding pocket front door, a postage-stamp-sized entry, and a unique step-ladder staircase to create a 16’ x 32’ parlor.
Francis Costigan, the home’s designer, is perhaps Indiana’s best pre-Civil War architect. Costigan also designed the Lanier Mansion and the Shrewsbury House, both designated as National Historic Landmarks. The Costigan house is considered one of his most unique architectural projects. Historic Madison, Inc., owns and operates the property.
